The Atlanta Thrashers chose to name their team after a bird. Historically, this has been successful with teams in other sports but not in hockey. Other hockey teams named after birds are the Blackhawks, Penguins and Ducks. The hawk, at least, is a tough bird. Of course, Chicago’s team is named after an American Indian Tribe, but they are also tough. Anaheim has a real problem with their name but they aren’t in the Southeast so i’m not solving it for them. Penguins are practically chickens so no serious organization would call themselves Penguins.
The Thrasher does not appear to be a tough bird. It’s know for having a very large repertoire of songs. A song bird is not a good mascot for a hockey team. It must have a very good agent.
The Atlanta organization unfortunately named their team after a french fry joint in Ocean City. So, I always think of this team as the Fry Guys. And that is what they shall be called forever and henceforth. The Atlanta Fry Guys.
